The Shoprite Group has a lot of supermarkets operating in all nine provinces of South Africa. The group has had a number of problems in the past but managed to regroup and establish a whole new system which helped them to be one of the best food retails in the country. The company employs thousands of people in the country and playing a big role in the fight against the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus.
The company is selling essential goods to the public during lockdown which means they are operating on a daily basis including holidays. Most of Shoprite stores are operating until 8pm and they also operate from Monday to Sunday including public holidays where they close at around 2pm during public hilidays.
Shoprite is also selling frozen food and not allowed to sell cooked food to the public as restaurants complained to the government that the food they sell at their businesses are sold at grocery stores but they were told to close business while grocery stores were not told to close their bakeries. Baked bread and cakes are only allowed to enter Shoprite stores straight from allowed bakeries that are operating during lockdown.
Employees of Shoprite Group are earning much better salary during lockdown as they are given overtimes every week which means their salaries are better than before. The workers are also guaranteed of their jobs which means they will not loose their jobs during lockdowns as they are privileged to have their jobs during these difficult times of the economy of South Africa and the rest of the world.
When it comes to the issue of helping in the fight against the spread of the coronavirus, Shoprite has personnel at their entrance where they are only there for sanitizing suctomers when entering their stores and when leaving. The group is also providing masks and gloves to their customers for free. The company is one of few who have been practising the use of sanitizers for a number of years as their stores have buckets full of sanitizer wipes to use on trolleys before using those trolleys and they have been having this practice for years.
South Africans are happy with the prices of essential goods at Shoprite so far as that can be seen by a number of customers queuing for essential goods on a daily basis at all Shoprite stores. The company is also allowed to operate its Pharmacy department which is know as Medrite where clients go for their medicines.
