Sassa Removes One Requirement For R350 Grant Applicants

Millions of people rely on the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant monthly to purchase essential goods. One requirement that prevented people from receiving grant payments has now been removed, and may increase the number of people benefiting from the grant.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has revealed that Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant applicants will no longer need to reconfirm their grant applications every three months.

This means that applicants can apply once and their applications for the SRD grant will be considered for every month the grant is available.

Sassa said, “Due to amended regulations clients do not need to resubmit responses to screening questions.”

The Department of Social Development (DSD) introduced the amended regulations in August as Sassa aimed to increase the uptake of the SRD grant among citizens.

However, the previous requirement for SRD grant applicants to reconfirm their grants every three months meant that some individuals missed out on receiving their July 2022 grant payment.

This regulation meant that everyone who applied for the SRD grant in April 2022 had to reconfirm their SRD grant applications for July 2022. This is because three months had passed since their original applications.

“The assessment for July 2022 had some delays because the previous regulations required people to reconfirm their grant every three months. June 2022 was the third month from April and many people failed to reconfirm their grants” explained the DSD.

Sassa has also called on SRD grant beneficiaries to provide their correct bank account details. This is because any errors made when submitting banking account information could result in your SRD grant not being paid.
