Main purpose of the job:

  • To collect clinical specimens and data for surveillance and research purposes from patients at designated sites [e.g., clinic, community, and hospital-based] in order to achieve the objectives within the project/program

Location:

  • NICD, Sandringham – Johannesburg

Key performance areas:

  • Rapidly identify eligible cases by (1) assessment (2) close liaison with the clinic staff, and (3) by using other methods that have been put in place for that site
  • Obtain informed consent and interview patients to fulfill ethical requirements and ensure the reliability of data
  • Assess patients in order to ascertain that they meet the study inclusion criteria, and complete case report forms by interview and/or record review and submit to the NICD timeously
  • Conduct counseling for recruitment and testing, as specified in the relevant research protocol
  • Collect clinical specimens as per the relevant protocol
  • Follow up with the receiving laboratory and troubleshoot any problems related to specimen receipt
  • File surveillance and research records on-site after data collection, according to the relevant protocol
  • Adhere to turnaround times with regard to queries raised on the case report forms
  • Compile site statistics and reports as dictated by the project activities or as required by the line manager
  • Work effectively with the existing DoH system in the district/region to achieve the objectives within the project/program
  • Perform tasks related to the research project as dictated by the project activities or as assigned by the line manager
  • Conduct monthly stock-taking accordingly in compliance with the inventory policy and timeously request stock via the line manager
  • Maintain confidentiality of any patient information and results at all times

Required minimum education and training:

  • Degree or 4-Year Diploma in Nursing

Required minimum work experience:

  • 3-5 years of clinical experience post qualification

Professional body registration:

  • SANC Registration as a Professional or Registered nurse

Desirable additional education, work experience, and personal abilities:

  • The successful incumbent must have the following:
    • NIMART Certification and valid dispensing license
    • 2-3 years experience in clinical research surveillance
    • Previous experience in STI/HIV and key populations (Men who have sex with men/MSM)
    • Knowledge of Good Clinical Practice
